A topic of conversation among friends has been "The Switch". This is the mechanism that stops you from doing something that you have an impulse to do.
Many of us have impulsive thoughts that strike us. Once, I was in the server room of the New York Stock Exchange for several days standing at a server rack performing some software upgrades. All around me were servers involved in the processing of trades and business of the world. Amongst the brutal boredom of standing in the same spot for hours and days at a time, I was enchanted by the idea of unplugging servers and watching the ensuing pandemonium. Would the event make the news? Would I be declared a terrorist?
That's when "The Switch" flipped and I knew I wouldn't act on my urge.
Another friend shared a different event. She was riding in the car on a nice day with the window down. She was in the passenger seat and they were passing a cyclist. Momentarily, she had the thought to reach out and swat his spandexed bottom as they passed. "The Switch" prevented her.
It's now official, "The Switch" exists!
